“Amritsar is of significant interest to tourists thanks to the Harmandir Sahib (The Golden Temple) and the city’s numerous historical and cultural sites,” AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said.

Ismail added that after AirAsia’s recent network review, the airline realized Amritsar and other cities in India were being “underserved from the Asia Pacific region” especially for those seeking affordable long-haul travel.
The initial route between Kuala Lumpur and Amritsar was announced earlier this year when AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes tweeted, “We finally did it @AirAsia is opening flights between Amritsar and Kuala Lumpur. I’m thrilled.”
The addition of Fly-Thru routes from Australia and even New Zealand were a bonus for Sikh pilgrims and globetrotters who want to see the world. However, the low fares on offer over the next few days are not available to those flying from New Zealand.
Why should you visit Amritsar?
Amritsar is home to the Sri Harmandir Sahib, informally known as the Golden Temple, which is one of the holiest places for Sikhs in the world.
The temple was built for worshippers from all walks of life and has four entrances which indicate that it is open for everyone.
However, if you’re not Sikh or even remotely religious, it is still a must-see in the area, especially at night as the temple shines brightly in the moonlight and casts a glow on the surrounding water.
If you want to purchase some authentic souvenirs, head to the Hall Bazaar for pretty much anything.
Here you’ll find fine textiles, jewelry, accessories, books, handicrafts, electronics, and home decor.
Amritsar is also home to what is known as the “Berlin Wall of Asia”, the Wagah Border Crossing.
The city’s close proximity to Pakistan has given way to a nightly colorful ceremony at the border known as the “lowering of the flags”.
The ceremony has gained an enormous following in the last 60 years and is now witnessed by hundreds of people every evening.
The lowering of the flags begins 30 minutes before sunset and entails the Border Security Force (BSF) sprinting towards the border gates and dancing to famous Bollywood tracks.
Spectators are also encouraged to get involved, so sit at the back if you don’t want to take part.
If you’re after a traditional Punjabi treat, head to Bharawan Da Dhaba near the Town Hall to sample some authentic and delicious food.
We recommended getting the regional thali which is a platter of dhal (lentil dish) and paneer (cheese), served with fresh naan, roti, and rice.
