The number of visitors coming to Hawaii rose 3.4 percent in April compared to the same month a year earlier. But the Hawaii Tourism Authority said Thursday tourist spending dropped more than 1 percent to $1.1 billion during the month.
The agency says travelers from Japan and other international markets increased but visitors declined from the U.S. mainland and Canada.
Hawaii Tourism Authority CEO George Szigeti says the state is ahead of last year’s record-setting pace for both visitor arrivals and spending. He says this reflects Hawaii’s enduring appeal to travelers worldwide.
Oahu and Maui had more visitors during the month but less spending. The Big Island had more visitors and spending. Travelers to Kauai were unchanged but Garden Isle spending increased.
