WHILE MUCH of the world was surprised by the recent revelations of the leaked papers from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca (the 4th largest in the world), at least one person saw this coming a mile away. In 2011 Bernie Sanders gave the above speech in response to a proposed fair trade agreement with Panama. In it he highlights how problematic this would be because the agreement would make it harder to crack down on the illegal practices going on in the tax haven. With the leaked papers proving illegal activities over the past four decades it’s hard to say how much the FTA played a role in this, but he couldn’t have been more right in bringing up those potential issues.
