Google has updated its Maps app in such a way that allows users to use the service as a discovery tool in addition to relying on it for directions. Available now on desktop, as well as Android and iOS devices, the maps now show “Areas of Interest,” which aim to make it easier for people to find restaurants, bars and cultural attractions that are in close proximity.
Areas of Interest show up on the map as orange-shaded areas, determined by algorithms meant to highlight spots with high concentrations of restaurants, bars and shops. In the old version of Google Maps, only landmarks like parks were displayed in a different color. Once you’ve found an area that you’d like to check out, simply zoom in and you’ll be able to see exactly what there is to do there.
