So much so that over half of Americans between the ages of 18 and 35 polled by the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion would rather die in an apocalyptic meteor event than see a Trump Presidency. 34% said the same of a Clinton Presidency, and 23% said they’d rather die by giant meteor than see either candidate elected.
This is in stark contrast to 2008, when Barack Obama was hugely popular among Millennials. The UMass Lowell poll found that 39% of Millennials would prefer President Obama simply declare himself President-for-Life rather than handing over power to the two main candidates.
Joshua Dyck, director of the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion, isn’t reading too much into the answers. “Obviously we don’t think that they’re serious,” he told the Guardian newspaper. “The fact that one in four of our young people pick ‘Giant Meteor’ tells you something about the political disaffection that is being shown by American youth.”
When polled about who they would vote for among the four most prominent Presidential candidates, Clinton had 48% of the vote, followed by Trump with 20%, Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson with 10%, and Green candidate Jill Stein coming in last place with 4%.
