HAWAII is the place where I’d like to be right this minute. I am currently in Western Canada and rain is falling heavily, taking all the snow away and making everything muddy and wet. I’m craving sunshine and warmth, hot sand and wild swimming, clear skies and greenery. I’m sure everyone who lives where winters are long and cold are on the same page as me.

Sharks
The story behind the shot: “This photo was taken on a snorkel trip out a few miles off the coast of O’ahu. I had seen an add for swimming with sharks and couldn’t pass the opportunity up. They took us on a boat out to spot in the ocean where the sharks gathered and we just jumped in no cage or anything! There were at least 40+ sharks by the guide’s estimate. It was one of the most surreal and coolest experiences of my life to share the open ocean with these creatures!”
Stingrays
The story behind the shot: “As I was leaving the beach I saw a couple fins sticking out of the water and people were pointing at it saying ‘Shark!’ I got excited and grabbed my camera and fins and noticed that they were stingrays. They quickly swam away when they saw me in the water, but as I got closer the mother (big one) slowed down and put her tail up warning me to stay back. It was very exciting to be so close to such beautiful creatures. I took a hint from the mom and backed off. When I surfaced after my pursuit of the rays, I looked back at the beach and noticed I was very far from shore. I guess I was so excited I didn’t realize how far I swam with them. It was an awesome experience. It’s rare to see a family of stingrays in the water in O’ahu.”

Haleakalā, Māui
Haleakalā volcano is currently dormant, but the Haleakalā National Park on the Hawaiian island of Māui is still a great place to check out craters.
Kīlauea, The Big Island of Hawai’i
The story behind the shot (below): “I was visiting the Big Island of Hawaii with some friends and family, and my brother convinced the group to take a lava tour by boat. I always kind of balk a little bit at overtly touristy stuff like that, but I think everyone was a pretty shocked when we got our first look at the Kalapana Lava Flow after about a half hour boat trip down the coast.
It’s such an awesome, phantasmagorical sight and, since they actually get surprisingly close to the spots where the rivers of lava meet the ocean and throw up sulfurous steam clouds, also a pretty visceral sensory experience.”
