Starwood Preferred Guest just announced its latest promotion, which lasts nearly through the end of the year. With this promo, cardholders of any American Express card can earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints if you stay for 15 or more nights at eligible SPG properties and pay with your American Express card through December 18, 2016.
In order to be eligible for the 5,000 bonus Starpoints, you must register in advance on SPG’s website and book and pay for your 15 nights with an American Express card by December 18. If you already have stays booked during the promotional period, they are eligible for this offer, but make sure you register in advance. Once you’ve completed the 15 nights, the 5,000 bonus Starpoints will post to your account within 2-4 weeks. Note that even though the Starwood-Marriott merger is well underway, only Starwood-branded hotels are eligible for this promotion, so any stays at Marriott or Ritz-Carlton properties won’t count.
Ultimately, 5,000 bonus Starpoints isn’t enough to go out of your way to stay at an SPG property. Based on TPG’s most recent valuations, the 5,000 bonus Starpoints are worth about $135. Because you must complete a minimum of 15 nights, each night will earn you about 333 bonus Starpoints — worth about $9 — so it’s definitely not worth switching all of your upcoming stays to Starwood. However, if you do have travel planned for the upcoming months that does involve SPG, this could be an added bonus.
If you’re planning on taking advantage, you’re best off using the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. It’s an Amex-issued card, so it’s eligible for the promotion, and it’ll earn you the greatest return on your stays. You’ll earn 2 Starpoints per dollar on eligible SPG purchases, in addition to those you’d normally earn as an SPG member. The card comes with a sign-up bonus of 25,000 points after you spend $3,000 in the first three months.
This promo can also be stacked with the other offers SPG is currently running. With the More for You promotion, you’ll earn 2x Starpoints on weekday stays and 3x Starpoints on weekend stays at select properties through December 18, 2016. In addition, SPG sometimes offers members-only exclusives, like a current targeted offer that will earn you up to 6,000 bonus Starpoints on your next three stays through November 15, 2016. There are also currently promotions with other chains, which could earn you some bonus points, such as the Marriott Fall 2016 MegaBonus to earn 5,000 points after two stays and 10,000 points after every 10 nights, up to 50,000 points. And Hyatt’s promo is potentially the most lucrative, offering up to 75,000 bonus points on stays through November.
