Delta’s first brand-new Airbus A350 recently arrived in the US and has brought with it a long-awaited all-suite business-class product that looks like it will be a huge improvement over the carrier’s current business offerings. First flying from Detroit (DTW) to Tokyo (NRT) on October 30, the plane will eventually fly between the DTW and Seoul (ICN) and Beijing (PEK) later this year. Amidst the fanfare, however, comes a bit of news that no one will be a fan of — the airline plans to add a surcharge for paid Delta One Suite tickets booked to and from Seoul (ICN), according to One Mile at a Time.
Specifically, tickets booked in a discounted business fare class (I or Z) will carry a $500 one-way surcharge. If you book a full business-class fare (C, D, and J) you’ll “only” have to shell out an additional $250 each way. It remains unclear whether the surcharge will apply to other aircraft types once they receive the Delta One Suite treatment, or if the carrier plans to add these charges on any other intercontinental routes. Delta has reportedly confirmed that it is indeed planning to charge these fees, but we’ve reached out to the airline for further clarification.
Though it’s not unprecedented for carriers to initially sell only full-fare tickets for brand-new products, it’s very odd and customer-unfriendly to charge a premium on top of the already sky-high cash prices (Delta One seats often sell for several thousand dollars one-way) you’d have to pay for the privilege of flying the new product.
