TPG reader Rich sent me a message on Facebook to ask about a booking in Singapore’s premium cabin:
Singapore Suites is one of my favorite first-class products, as well as one of the best premium bargains out there for award travelers. You can book these suites on long-haul flights like New York to Frankfurt for less than 60,000 miles each way, and those miles are fairly easy to come by thanks to Singapore’s multitude of airline and transfer partners. The suites can be a particularly good option when you’re with company, since some of them are designed for couples traveling together. However, passengers have to be ticketed into a suite individually in order to sit there.
The two-person suites are comprised of middle seats that transform into a double bed, but the seats remain independent from one another. They’re separated by several feet, and there’s a partition that can be put up if you’re not traveling with the passenger next to you (or if you just want privacy). Each seat has to be booked on its own, which means double the cost if you’re traveling with a partner. You can’t just book one of the middle seats alone and then invite another passenger to join you from a different class of service.
In contrast, the fare for The Residence on Etihad’s A380 does allow you to bring a travel companion — you only have to cover the additional taxes for the second passenger. Unlike Singapore Suites and Etihad’s own A380 Apartment, the space is intended to accommodate two people, and you can both fit in the sitting area comfortably (though sharing the bed would be a bit of a squeeze). The Residence is expensive, and while you can book it using miles, you won’t get a great redemption value. Still, it’s a unique and memorable flight experience, so you might consider it if you have the cash or miles to burn.
