The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express and the Blue Cash Preferred Card are some of the lesser-known cash-back options out there, but both have received new bonus offers that make them more attractive than ever if you’re a new cardholder and will be making significant travel purchases in the upcoming months.
The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express
First up, the Blue Cash Everyday Card is now offering new cardholders up to $300 in cash back. Note that this breaks down into two separate categories: You’ll get $100 back after spending $1,000 in purchases on the card in the first three months, plus 5% back on $4,000 in eligible travel purchases made with the card in the first six months — which equals up to $200 back.
This is definitely an improvement from the previously available offer of $100 back after spending $1,000 in the first three months (without the option to earn up to $200 by making eligible travel purchases). Eligible travel purchases include airfare, hotel stays, car rentals, cruise tickets and tours.
If you prefer cash back to earning travel rewards such as transferable points and you plan on booking quite a bit of travel in the near future, the Blue Cash Everyday Card could be a good option. It could also make sense if you’re looking for a solid no-fee card. In addition to this 5% back offer on travel purchases for new cardholders, the card also offers 3% back at US supermarkets (on up to $6,000 in purchases per year), 2% back at US gas stations and 1% back everywhere else.
The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express
The more premium Blue Cash Preferred Card, with a $95 annual fee, is now offering a 5% travel bonus as well. So now, you’ll be able to earn up to $350 as a new cardholder: $150 after you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first three months, plus up to $200 thanks to 5% back on $4,000 in eligible travel purchases made on the card in the first six months.
In addition to offering a higher welcome offer than its no-fee sibling, the Blue Cash Preferred features higher cash-back rates on the same categories: 6% back on purchases at US supermarkets (also on up to $6,000 per year) and 3% back at US gas stations. You’ll also get 3% back at select US department stores, in addition to 1% back on all other purchases.
Bottom Line
While these updates to the Blue Cash Everyday Card and Blue Cash Preferred Card aren’t technically new sign-up bonuses, they do provide extra incentive for those who don’t currently hold either card and haven’t in the past. Since Amex has a once-in-a-lifetime policy for receiving a sign-up bonus on a given card — and the Terms & Conditions explicitly exclude former and current cardholders — you won’t be eligible for the 5% back on travel purchases if you’ve previously held either product. However, if you’ve been thinking about applying for one of these cash-back options and tend to spend on travel, this update definitely makes them even more appealing, at least in the short term. It’s unclear how long this offer will stick around, so act sooner than later if you’re interested.
