IN DECEMBER 2017, Thailand’s famous Go-Ang Kaomunkai Pratunam received a Michelin Bib Gourmand nod for its Thai-style Hainanese chicken rice dish, known locally as khao man gai.
Established in 1960 as a humble food stall selling khao man gai in the Pratunam district of Bangkok, Go-Ang is so immensely popular with tourists that it is not uncommon to see mind-blogging queues of locals and tourists alike.
If you are unfamiliar with the original Hainanese chicken rice, it is a simple dish adapted from early Chinese immigrants originally from Hainan province in southern China.
It consists of succulent steamed white chicken cut into bite-size pieces and served on fragrant rice with some light soy sauce, topped with sprigs of coriander leaf and sesame oil, and accompanied by a garlic-chili dip.
Although it is popular in Singapore, it is also commonly associated with Malaysian cuisine and can be found in Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
In Malaysia, as in Singapore, chicken rice is available in many Chinese coffee shops, restaurants and street hawker stalls, and also in chain restaurants such as The Chicken Rice Shop and OldTown White Coffee.
Go-Ang’s take on the dish, said to be the best in the Thai capital, is similar to the original, but the restaurant also sells a variety side dishes such as soups, their signature braised pork, vegetables, and chicken liver.
One serving typically costs THB40 (US$1.22), and the side dishes will set you back an upwards of THB50 (US$1.52) each.
Bringing Go-Ang’s delectable creations to the tropical island will require Go-Ang founder Mr. Sombat Pruekpaiboon to train the kitchen staff ahead of the restaurant’s opening in Singapore’s NEX shopping mall.
Pruekpaiboon will also be assisting The Minor Food Group Singapore, which will manage Go-Ang Singapore, with the launch of the outlet to ensure it is in line with his vision for an authentic Go-Ang dining experience.
Go-Ang Singapore is slated to open its doors to the public on Oct 20, 2018.
