Aurora Expeditions will build a second expedition ship, the Sylvia Earle, scheduled to debut in October 2021.
The 126-passenger vessel will spend its first season in Antarctica, sailing from Ushuaia, Argentina.
The order comes shortly after the Australia-based company introduced its first new expedition ship in 2019, the Greg Mortimer, named for the Australian mountaineer and Aurora’s founder.
Aurora, which has operated polar tours for 27 years, utilized chartered ships prior to building the Greg Mortimer.
The Sylvia Earle is named after the marine biologist who was the first woman to be chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and also Time Magazine’s first Hero for the Planet in 1998.
Aurora said its two ships use the cleanest marine engines in the world and that onboard desalination plants convert seawater to freshwater. The company also says that the ships’ inverted bow design offers “unrivalled stability and comfort on ocean crossings.”
Activities on the new ship will include kayak expeditions, polar ski touring, climbing, snowshoeing, hiking and exploration by Zodiac, bringing guests to the heart of destinations.
