The value of airline tickets that U.S. travel agencies sold in 2016 decreased 3% year over year, according to ARC, but the number of tickets increased 5.8%.
In 2016, travel agencies’ airline ticket sales totaled $86 billion, down from $88 billion in 2015. ARC attributed the decrease to declining airfares throughout the year.

Meanwhile, ancillary sales and transactions, tracked via the electronic miscellaneous document (EMD), both continued to increase, which ARC has attributed to EMD readiness.
EMD sales went up 156%, from $19.5 million in 2015 to $50 million last year. EMD transactions increased 250%, from 236,000 in 2015 to 825,250 in 2016.
