Last month, Amtrak decided to behave a little more like an airline, allowing first class passengers the ability to choose their seat. And just like an airline, the train carrier made a negative change for passengers too, when it made its cancellation and refund policies less generous earlier this year. Now, it has done another thing that would not look out of place at an airline: It has partnered with a major food brand to step up its menus. Not surprising, after all, considering that Amtrak’s chief executive since last year has been Richard Anderson, who used to run Delta.
Now Amtrak has decided to step up its train menus for the Northeast corridor routes. A partnership with Boar’s Head and the addition of new items are making the dining options on board more extensive and, according to Amtrak, more appetizing.
Previously, Amtrak offered some simple, non-name brand options for sandwiches. But now, the introduction of Board’s Head will improve the freshness and quality of meat and cheese options that Amtrak serves on board. There will also be a better selection of sandwiches – and some sound straight out of a brasserie, like the turkey and French brie sandwich. They’ve upgraded salads, as well. A simple Caesar will now have kale and quinoa. There’s an Asian-style noodle bowl, too.
Passengers will also see Boar’s Head meat and some more healthful options in the new breakfast menu. On top of the bagel and cream cheese, Jimmy Dean sandwich and other items that Amtrak has been serving for breakfast, there will be Boar’s Head meat and cheese on a Brooklyn bialy. Parfaits, low-fat yogurt, parfaits and Abbotsford hard-boiled eggs will be integrated into the menu as well. Snacks include healthier options, like fresh veggies with dip. Amtrak is also including gluten-free options and premium alcohol brands.
