American Airlines has extended cancellations related to the grounding of its fleet of 24 Boeing 737 Max aircraft through April 24.
“This will result in the cancellation of approximately 90 flights each day based on our April schedule,” the carrier said in statement. “By proactively canceling these flights, we are able to provide better service to our customers with availability and rebooking options.”
American noted that not all flights that had been slated for Max 8 service will be cancelled. Some will instead be operated with other aircraft. Conversely, some flights that weren’t scheduled with a Max will be canceled so that the airline can substitute that aircraft onto a Max route.
American noted that travel advisors who booked flights for clients will contact their customers directly to inform them of cancellations. The carrier said it will rebook such flights for free or provide full refunds.
Max aircraft in U.S. fleets have been grounded by order of the FAA since March 13. The grounding followed crashes of 737 Max planes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in October and March, respectively. Boeing is currently working on a software fix designed to address faulty communications between a sensor on the aircraft wing and the flight automation system, which investigators blame for the October crash of a Lion Air Max 8.
