JAPAN’S biggest airline, All Nippon Airways (ANA), will start serving sake to economy class passengers on all international flights. This is in addition to existing sake services for first class, business class, and premium economy passengers.
An ANA spokesperson told Travel Wire Asia, “The number of visitors to Japan is constantly increasing and the Japanese government’s target is to welcome 40 million foreign visitors in 2020, when the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place.
“We believe that many of the visitors to Japan are curious about the Japanese culture, including the famous sake tradition.”
The sake service will be free for all passengers, and will attempt to showcase the nation’s high-quality brews. “Our sake service is for everyone to enjoy, and we do not particularly aim to attract certain types of travelers by introducing this new service,” ANA said.
“At the same time, ANA is contributing to the promotion of Japan’s proud sake culture, both overseas and domestically.”
Despite the boom of budget airlines and struggle of full-service premium airlines in Asia, ANA is growing at a rapid pace.
A recent report revealed that the airline is growing at four times the speed of Japan Airlines in international routes. ANA’s network development is concentrated on the international market, with its monthly international seat capacity growing by 6.8 percent this summer.
In the domestic market, ANA is the leading airline with 42 percent of the market’s capacity in its hold. The airline welcomed just under 20.7 million passengers on domestic services.
