A REPORT in Forbes revealed that Airbnb is in the process of cleaning up its inventory in South Korea to comply with local laws.
In South Korea, properties advertised on sites like Airbnb are required to report to central and local governments as operating lodging businesses for foreigners.
Forbes added that it is also illegal to convert studios in high-rise buildings intended for offices and residences. These types of listings make up a huge number of Airbnb listings, especially those in the hip district of Gangnam.
An Airbnb spokesperson in Korea commented on the crackdown: “We are trying our best to identify all the illegal listings. But identifying the hosts is quite difficult.”
Airbnb is also in trouble in New York, where a ban has been introduced on advertising short-term rentals for less than 30 days if the owner is not present.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the ban cuts the core of Airbnb’s business, which allows a family or young professional to earn cash by renting out a room or apartment while traveling away from home.
Meanwhile, Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA), Australia’s peak accommodation body, wishes for similar legislation to be enforced in Australia.
