GILI has climbed the ranks as one of Indonesia’s top destinations alongside the likes of Bali and Borobudur. Just off the coast of Lombok, the Gili islands are not yet as developed as Bali, but if it’s heading in that direction, you best be on your way soon.
What was once an island cluster almost exclusively for backpackers, Gili is on track to becoming the island of choice among regional and Australian tourists. Though not as glamorous as the restaurants, bars and shops of Bali, it’s generally laidback for tourists who want to strip off all manner of frivolity.
You can access Gili via Lombok, from where there are chartered boats, ferries, and chartered speedboats. To save a few bucks, some tourists take a shuttle bus or taxi to the harbor of Bangsal before getting into Gili via a public boat. This journey takes a long time, and can sometimes lead to stressful haggling experiences.
Your best bet is to simply head to a travel agent near the Lombok airport and book a boat ride out. It’s reliable and prices are fairly low. Note that boats and ferries usually take off in the mornings and stop services into the late afternoon.

Gili Air
What to expect
Among the three Gili islands, Gili Air is the closest to Lombok and is where many of Gili’s locals reside. On Gili Air, not all locals have their hands in the tourism industry, some are fishermen or work in coconut groves.
According to many, the island is home to some of the best beaches among the three islands, and it’s where the sand is said to be wider and whiter.
Plus, the views overlooking Lombok’s mountainous northern coast are unparalleled, and something you might not get on the other two islands.
What to do
Snorkelers can access the reef straight off the beach, and make an entire day out of spotting thousands of colorful fish and sea turtles.
Otherwise, choose from more than 20 dive sites within easy reach. Beginners are welcome, and trained instructors will take them through all the way to a diving certificate.
One of the things we love about Gili Air is the kitesurfing. Trainers will provide lessons to first-timers, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a feeling like no other to whiz across the waters, wind in your hair. You can also opt for stand-up paddling, wakeboarding and surfing.
Will I enjoy it
If you want a good balance of water sports and tranquillity, Gili Air is the chill-out island for you.
Gili Trawangan
What to expect
Gili Trawangan is undoubtedly the most popular among the three Gili islands, a wild, raucous party island for the young and hip. On the street, expect to encounter many whizzing motorbikes, horse-drawn carts, vendors and a stretch of lively restaurants, bars and guesthouses.
The social atmosphere of the island is the main draw for many tourists, but those looking for a more peaceful, luxurious experience can rent out private villas where they can lounge in their own balconies and bask in their own infinity pools looking out into the ocean.
What to do
A common activity on the island is island hopping, where you’re taken on a day’s trip to Gili’s neighboring islands. It’s a good way to get to know the Gili cluster of islands without having to put up at all of them.
Gili Trawangan also has many teaching centers for first-time divers, and you’ll be guided through colorful marine life and shipwrecks. For the more adventurous, freedive and apnea courses are also available.
Kayaking is also a good way to tour the island, and after a run-through of safety precautions, you’re left on your own to paddle your way through the calm, blue waters.
Of course, it’s not a trip to Gili Trawangan without crashing a party. Parties can sometimes take place every night, and joints like Rudy’s, the Irish Bar or the Blue Marlin are regular hosts.
Twice a month, The Surf Bar is home to a full moon beach party where the music blasts and the people dance right into the next morning. You’ve been warned.
Will I enjoy it
If you’re traveling alone, Gili Trawangan is where you might meet fellow travelers. The bustling atmosphere is also great for a hen’s or stag’s weekend away.
Gili Meno
What to expect
GIli Meno is the quietest and the smallest among the three islands, a serene sanctuary where the beaches are unspoiled and the sand impossibly fine. Right off the bat, it comes across as a honeymoon island.
Even though the accommodation at Gili Meno is largely private, the villas here are less developed and not as luxurious as those in Gili Trawangan.
What to do
Really, the best thing to do here is absolutely nothing. Gili Meno is where you simply want to lie on the sand for hours, book on your lap, blue skies above. Occasionally, you might sip on a cocktail or take an afternoon nap in the sun.
If you must partake in an activity that requires you to get off your lazybed, the turtle sanctuary is an enlightening center where sea turtles are protected, hatched and released into the sea at a year old. This increases their chances of survival than if they were to wander off into the sea still a newborn.
Will I enjoy it
It’s perfect if you’re traveling on a romantic escapade. On the other hand, Gili Meno also works if you want to be left completely alone and undisturbed to gather your thoughts.
