TO commemorate Singapore’s National Day, selected Jetstar flights on August 9 will see pilots and cabin crew using Singlish to make in-flight announcements.
Singlish is the local Singaporean patois that combines English and slang words such as ‘lah’, sometimes baffling visitors.
Passengers aboard Jetstar had a good laugh when Singlish was used on the eve of April Fool’s this year as a joke. The warm response led to the airline being flooded by social media requests to continue the tradition, which led to the decision for National Day.
A teaser video was released, and the pilot can be heard saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking ah! Weather along the way is quite swee. But just to be safe, please kiap your seatbelt tight hor. Thank you and enjoy your flight.”
Meanwhile, a member of the cabin crew was seen making announcements like, “Ladies, and gentlemen, the seatbelt turn off already. Your barang-barang may have moved during takeoff. Later also we’ll be coming around for duty free. All same price, confirm plus chop.”
Throughout the video, passengers were visibly amused about the use of Singlish.
In the pipeline is a continuous effort by Jetstar to incorporate Singlish into their in-flight service. The airline is training flight attendants to provide Singaporean customers with personalized, accessible service using language passengers are most comfortable conversing in.
