A FLIGHT attendant from the Philippine-based low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific Air was reportedly slapped in the face by an angry passenger after the attendant refused to carry her luggage for storage in an overhead compartment.
The news of the incident is making its rounds on social media on Sunday, going viral after the cabin crew leader Madel Ty posted photos on social media showing the markings left on her face and neck as a result of the strike.
In the posting, Ty said she was pursuing legal action against the passenger, who claimed to be a doctor.
“I’m doing this for my fellow cabin crew. Hope this serves as a lesson to fight for what is right, and hopefully it won’t happen again,” she said in the caption, as translated by I heart Cabin Crew.
“I’m not a crew who always argue with passengers. But since I’m the lead cabin crew, I’m already involved in this incident and I am responsible for the rest of my crew.”
Ty did not elaborate on what led to the incident but underlined a flight attendant’s main priority, which is to ensure passenger safety, not including carrying or lifting bags.
She said that after refusing to help with stowing the luggage, the woman had hurled insults at the flight crew, comparing them to bus fare collectors.
“For the record, fare collectors don’t carry bags either. There’s nothing wrong with our job or being a fare collector. We have an honorable job,” Ty said in the posting.
Ty said she did not take the remarks personally and even tried apologizing to the woman repeatedly.
“You insulted our job and our whole identity. But this is too much. My parents didn’t send me to school just for you to slap me. In the end, it’s not I who looked uneducated and ill-mannered,” she said.
Ty deleted her post on Sunday after it gained widespread attention.
