Known as the so-called “Spotify” of workout apps, Sworkit comes in both a free version — which contains more than 20 pre-built workouts that let you focus on yoga, cardio, stretching or strength training — and a paid version. The extra $3.99 per month entitles you to create custom workouts and gives you the support of a trainer, while also providing age-specific exercises for older adults. For business travelers in a rush, the ability to schedule workout time gives you the ability to get a short five-minute burst of energy before rushing out the door for your morning coffee.
2. Nike Training Club
For exercise fiends who need some extra inspiration, Nike Training Club is just what the doctor ordered, and then some. The app gives you the opportunity to select workouts ranging from 15-45 minutes, and you can choose between low, medium and high-intensity levels depending on your mood that day. Nike recently debuted a new interface earlier this month that demonstrates videos of how to perform specific workouts as well so you don’t lose form in the middle of a high-intensity workout.
3. MapMyRun
When I travel, I like to explore every nook and cranny of the city, and one of the best ways I’ve been able to do that is by running. With MapMyRun, you’re able to procure a searchable list of routes in the city that you’re traveling to. I really like this feature, as it enables me to go on runs like a “National Monument Five-Miler” if I’m in Washington, D.C., or an “Art Run” if I’m in Paris. Once you start your workout, you can view anything from the amount of calories burned to elevation climbed — it’s quite the ego boost if you’re running up a mountain! — and invite your friends so you can track their workouts as well. The paid version offers more in the way of training plans, as well as more detailed maps.
4. MyFitnessPal
Maybe some of you don’t actually think about this, but when I’m on vacation or traveling for business, I constantly find myself asking “How many calories is this chicken biryani or deep dish pizza exactly?” MyFitnessPal makes it easy to track what you eat, and if you’re in the middle of a 30-course meal, you can input every single food at once and see exactly how many calories you’ve consumed. Not only that, but you can create a personal food diary and see what you’ve been consuming over the course of your cruise or European adventure. The other benefit to MyFitnessPal is the multitude of exercises it keeps track of — more than 350 — so after logging your workouts, those food diaries won’t make you feel so bad.
5. Pocket Yoga
There are times when a long run or a weightlifting session at the gym just won’t cut it and you need a little bit of stretching and meditation in your life. Pocket Yoga contains more than 200 different poses designed by experienced yoga instructors and lets you unlock new features as you progress in your yoga journey. Unfortunately, it’s only available on for Apple devices and costs $2.99, but this yoga app beats the $150 you might end up spending at a studio.
