Looking for a card that earns you bonus cash back? Amex has two options that could be up your alley, especially if you like dining out. As of today, the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express and the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express are offering 10% back on purchases at US restaurants for the first six months of cardmembership.
Previously, the two cards were offering 10% back at Amazon, and as with that promotion, this current offer only applies to new cardholders. The 10% cash back is capped at $200 (so on up to $2,000 in spending at US restaurants), and this offer is only available to those who apply by May 3, 2017.
Is it worth it?
As is always the case, deciding whether this offer makes sense for you requires taking a look at your spending habits and rewards-earning priorities. Not everyone wants a card that earns cash back; many award travelers prefer to earn transferable points for their spending, and options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve (3x Ultimate Rewards points on dining as well as travel) and the Citi ThankYou Premier (2x ThankYou points on dining plus entertainment) are good options for restaurant spending both in the US and abroad. However, if your priority is to put some cash back in your wallet, the Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred could make sense.
Apart from the current offer 10% back at US restaurants, these two cards get you cash back on permanent bonus categories. The Blue Cash Everyday offers 3% back at US supermarkets (on up to $6,000 in spending per year) and 2% back at US gas stations and select US department stores (and 1% back everywhere else). It’s also offering a sign-up bonus of $100 back after you spend $1,000 in your first three months as a cardmember, and it has no annual fee.
Meanwhile, the Blue Cash Preferred gets you 6% back at US supermarkets (on up to $6,000 in spending per year; then 1%) and 3% back at US gas stations and select US department stores (plus 1% back on everything else). It has an annual fee of $95, and it’s currently offering new cardholders $150 back when they spend $1,000 in the first three months. Both cards charge 2.7% foreign transaction fees, so you won’t want to use them for purchases abroad (and that spending won’t qualify for bonus cash back, anyway).
Bottom Line
The Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred Cards are far from your only choices when it comes to earning bonus rewards on spending at US restaurants, but they could make sense if you prefer cash back to redeemable travel rewards. Just keep in mind that the offer of 10% back at US restaurants is only available when you sign up by May 3, 2017.
