It would certainly be a labor of (burnin’) love.
The orange 1960s paint job is chipping and rusted, the red velvet seats and red shag carpet need reupholstering — oh and there is no engine whatsoever — but Elvis’ former private jet, a vintage Lockheed Jetstar 1329 has hit the auction block.
Auction site Iron Planet is currently accepting bids on The King’s customized private plane until July 27.
The 56-year-old jet has been sitting out in the elements on a runway at a boneyard in Roswell, New Mexico, for the last three decades and has gone virtually untouched since Elvis last flew it. The plane interior features gold-plated and wood paneled accents added by The King himself and has been privately owned for the past 35 years.
Elvis’ Lockheed Jetstar is one of 204 built by the aircraft manufacturer between 1957 and 1978.
It’s the only one of Presley’s fleet of three private jets that has remained in private ownership over the years. The singer’s other two jets — another Lockheed Jetstar nicknamed Hound Dog II and a Convair 880 called Lisa Marie — are owned by the Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee.
The plane is being sold “as is” and, as the auction site notes, it is lacking a few key components. “Missing items: Engines & cockpit components,” the auction page warns. The sale also includes “all FAA documents and invoices showing previous ownership by Elvis Presley.” But, there doesn’t seem to be any documentation available as to where or when Presley flew the jet.
It isn’t clear how much the derelict jet will fetch at the auction — or if it will even be purchased at all — but when it was last up for sale in 2017, the plane went for $430,000.
