On January 8, TPG Senior Writer Julian Kheel appeared on Cheddar and spoke with Kristen Scholer and Tim Stenovec about JFK’s bomb cyclone mishap and offered some tips for winter travel.
First, Julian explained that the first mistake of JFK following the bomb cyclone winter storm on January 4 was the “aggressive schedule for reopening.” The airport officially closed on Thursday, but reopened in the early Friday afternoon, causing hundreds of international flights to enter NYC with nowhere to land.
According to Julian, the JFK mayhem doesn’t fall solely on airport but also on Port Authority. He stated that Port Authority should have notified FAA that the airport couldn’t handle any more arrivals for the day. Instead, the reopening caused two days worth of planes repositioned at the airport at the same time.
Despite the unprecedented number of cancellations and delays, the airlines have not publicly disclosed the terms and conditions of compensation for travelers affected. However, it is suggested that you should contact the airlines directly and it’s up to travelers to choose their method of compensation, whether it’s a refund or credit/points.
When it comes to traveling during the winter period, airline cancelations and delays are sometimes unavoidable. However, Julian’s main tip for traveling during the winter is to know alternate routes for your trip. In addition to knowing your flight status, you should search alternative flights for the day of you travel just in case something goes wrong. You’re much more likely to get to your destination if you know other ways to get there; “knowledge is power,” he said.
