British journalist and broadcaster Anne Diamond will be the godmother of Viking’s seventh ocean ship, the Viking Venus, which is scheduled to debut this spring.
The 930-passenger Venus was floated out last June and is now under final construction at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy.
Diamond is best known for her work on U.K. morning shows during the 1980s. Her career in frontline television has lasted for more than 40 years, during which time she covered the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Australian Bicentenary and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. She’s interviewed Bette Davis, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
She also pioneered the 1991 U.K. cot death campaign, following the death of her son, Sebastian. The campaign, to have babies put to bed on their backs, is said to have saved over 20,000 babies, and inspired other life-saving campaigns worldwide. She is the only non-medic ever to hold the Medal of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health.
Diamond’s interviews can currently be seen on Viking’s enrichment channel, Viking.TV, which went live in March 2020 as a way to build community and stay connected while people are home. Every Thursday since its launch, Diamond has interviewed a wide spectrum of figures with relationships to Viking, such as cellist and humanitarian Yo-Yo Ma; Xander Parish, principal ballet dancer at the Mariinsky Theatre; and polar explorers Liv Arnesen and Ann Bancroft, recently named as the godmothers of the 378-passenger Viking Octantis, Viking’s first expedition ship, which was floated out on Dec. 22.
