Carnival Cruise Line will get a pair of new ships in 2020 and 2022 that will be powered by liquid natural gas (LNG) instead of diesel fuel.
At current prices, natural gas is less expensive than diesel, and it burns more cleanly.
The 5,200-passenger, 180,000-gross-ton ships will be the largest ever built for the Carnival brand and the first in North America to be powered by LNG.
Carnival Corp. previously announced two LNG-powered ships for its German Aida brand, and two for its Italian Costa brand.
The agreements to build another two LNG vessels for Carnival, plus one for P&O Cruises, will bring to seven the number of LNG cruise ships on order by Carnival Corp.
The Carnival ships will be built at the shipyard in Turku, Finland, that Meyer Werft acquired in 2014. Carnival Corp. last built a ship in Finland 12 years ago, the company said.
Twelve of the Carnival brand’s 25 ships were constructed in Finland, including its eight Fantasy-class ships and four Spirit-class ships.
Carnival said the order was subject to several conditions, including “satisfactory financing.” It said specific design details would be announced at a later date.
