Tourism has the ability to help South Africa to meet and exceed national and regional socio-economic goals, says Lisa Sheard.
In a recent column, Sheard outlined 12 reasons as to why this was the case, highlighting job creation and social cohesion as some of the factors. She added that tourism also encouraged entrepreneurship: “There is plenty of space for entrepreneurs and small businesses, which are often preferred for the experiential products that tourists want.”
Sheard also highlighted the accessibility of the sector for people without formal and/or tertiary qualifications. “The key requirements are an ability to learn, good attitude, people skills and customer focus,” she said.
