THE FEAR OF FLYING can really take the joy out of air travel.
With that having said, where exactly is the safest part in a plane?
Multiple statistics and crash data have shown that the safest seat on a plane is in the rear section. To be more precise, the middle seats in the rear historically have the highest survival rates.
According to TIME, seats in the back third of the aircraft had a 32 percent fatality rate, compared with 39 percent in the middle third and 38 percent in the front third.
“Looking at row position, we found that the middle seats in the rear of the aircraft had the best outcomes (28 percent fatality rate). The worst-faring seats were on the aisle in the middle third of the cabin (44 percent fatality rate),” TIME wrote.

On top of that, the Aviation Safety Network also published an analysis dated January 2017 which stated that out of 65 fatal jetliner accidents that had at least one survivor, there were 36 in which the rear was among the safest locations of the aircraft.
The Aviation Safety Network drew a comparison with the center and front, deemed among the safest in 21 and 30 instances, hence concluding that the safest part in a plane is in the rear of the cabin.
Of course, while the last-picked seat has been proven to be the safest, it really depends on the type of aircraft you’re in.
It’s also worth noting that the above numbers are based on at purely accidental crashes, so terror or suicide-related incidents weren’t included.
Still not convinced?
A recent report by Dutch consulting firm To70 and the Aviation Safety Network announced 2017 to be the safest year on record for aviation.
The same consulting firm estimated the chances of dying in a plane crash are now one in 16 million, so you’re more likely to be struck by lightning or eaten by a shark than die in a plane crash.
