THEATER usually evokes memories of loud music, ‘jazz hands’, twisting plot lines and talented actors entertaining you until the interval comes when you can gorge on ice cream.
Even if you’re well versed in theater shows, independent playwrights, and film-to-stage adaptions, United Kingdom-based theater company Secret Theatre Project may have slipped your all-singing, all-dancing radar, but that’s their intention.
For those of you who are yet to be overwhelmingly excited at the prospect of seeing one of the most elusive plays in the world, let’s delve a little further into their performance.
Despite the name, Secret Theatre Project doesn’t always take place in a purpose-built theater. Instead, local surroundings are used as the stage.
The shows elusiveness begins when you blindly buy a ticket. No information is given about the show until a ticket is bought and even then, only a dress code, password and location are given to the performance-goer. Upon arrival, the audience can only expect to stay at the meeting location for a short while, before being whisked away on an adventurous, hands-on, immersive journey.
In past shows, “spectators” began at Central in Hong Kong before speeding away on a boat to solve a murder in a haunted mansion on Lamma Island – very much along the same storyline of the 1995 crime thriller, SE7EN Deadly Sins.
The name of the show is yet to be revealed, but we do know it will run from May 3 until June 10. Don’t worry about someone spoiling the show for you, though, as multiple spaces around Singapore will be used to create one of the greatest immersive theater experiences in the world.
Tickets are already on sale already, with early bird purchases starting from SGD$99 (US$76), but don’t expect to find out any more information about the show, just know it is set to be a “sexy, dangerous thrill ride”.
