OFTEN, we want to be able to make the best out of our trips: eat to our heart’s content, see and do as much as possible, the works. But what if there just isn’t enough time?
With Bangkok’s new Bangkok-Pattaya train service, travelers can now get more out of their Thailand holiday.
It takes about three and a half hours to get from Bangkok to Pattaya, a city on Thailand’s eastern Gulf coast known for its beaches. Initially a quiet fishing village, it’s now lined with resort hotels, high-rise condos, shopping malls, designer golf courses, cabaret bars and 24-hour clubs.
Prior to this, a quick day trip to Pattaya would’ve been impossible unless visitors spend the night, due to the timing of the trains. The current train runs only on weekdays, leaving Bangkok and reaching Pattaya at 11:20am, while the only train to Bangkok from Pattaya leaves at 1:35pm.
The new train line, however, will change everything.

The service, which operates twice a day only on weekends, will depart from Bangkok at 6:30am and arrive at Pattaya at 9am, and leave Pattaya at 3:50pm and reach Bangkok at 6:50pm. The new train will also be air-conditioned, unlike the current train, and the journey will be shortened by about an hour, so visitors can get to the resort city in two and a half hours.
The State Railway of Thailand tourism marketing executive Oratai Suwannatas reportedly told DPA the new service “is to accommodate both Thai and foreign tourists planning for one-day or weekend trips in Pattaya”.
To add on, according to the Pattaya Mail, there will be six stations on the new train service. Passengers will be able to alight at any of the six stations to visit nearby tourist attractions as shuttle services will be available at each station.
The six stops will be located near the Sriracha Tiger Zoo, North Pattaya, Pattaya Floating Market, Yanasanwararam Temple, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and the Plutaluang Railway Station.
The train service is set to begin in mid-to-late March.
It will run on a six-month trial for now but if the trial run is successful, the train will operate on a permanent basis.
