THE MahaNakohn, Thailand’s tallest building, turned on its lights for the first time yesterday in a flashy, dramatic light and sound ceremony.
Lights were beamed onto the 314-meter-tall structure and skywards from the building at Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Road in the Silom area.
Prizes were awarded by the developer to those who posted the best photos and videos of the show on social media.
The towering structure by Pace Developmentwas designed by German architect Ole Scheeren, who has graced many a skyscraper in Asia with his signature geometric style.
“MahaNakhon is a vision of a tower that is very much about process, about becoming, about developing,” Scheeren tells CNN of the building.
He added, “This contradictory mix of tradition and modernity has given Bangkok an eclectic skyline that hosts some of the craziest architecture on the planet.”
“” has a robot building, an elephant building, pyramid buildings, UFOs… all of that juxtaposed with traditional Thai temples, colors and textures.”
MahaNakohn has 77 floors, The Bangkok EDITION hotel, retail stores bars, restaurants, and 200 units of Ritz-Carlton Residences condominiums.
The building is home to the first Morimoto outlet in southeast Asia, a Japanese fusion spot helmed by Masahuru Morimoto of Iron Chef America fame.
Meanwhile, the Ritz-Carlton Residences aim to provide residents an experience of “living in the sky”, combined with the services and facilities typically offered with the brand.
Because of its high altitude, residents will be able to look out to Bangkok’s iconic Chao Phraya River, and many other city sites. Limited units are up for purchase for both Thais and foreigners.
Both the Ritz-Carlton Residences and The Bangkok EDITION are sure to draw in a slew of business travelers, both relying on sophisticated facilities as well as a convenient central location.
