Want to fly JetBlue on the cheap? Now’s a good time to find an award, as Citi is offering a 30% bonus when you transfer ThankYou points to JetBlue’s TrueBlue program.
Normally Citi’s transfer ratio to JetBlue is pretty poor, at just 1,000:800 for the Citi Prestige and Citi ThankYou Premier (it’s even worse for the ThankYou Preferred, at 1,000:500). With the 30% bonus that transfer ratio becomes 1,000:1,040 or 1,000:650 for the Preferred. The promotion ends on May 19 at 11:59pm. You’ll have to transfer points in increments of 1,000 and they should show up in your JetBlue account instantly.
TPG values JetBlue points at a conservative 1.3 cents apiece, but you can find redemptions that get you as much as 1.5 – 1.6 cents a point. And if you’re a JetBlue Plus cardholder, you’ll receive 10% of your points back when booking an award ticket with the carrier. You can book JetBlue Mint, JetBlue’s lie-flat business class, or even Hawaiian airlines flights with JetBlue points. JetBlue constantly runs flash sales too, and since its point values are directly tied to the cash price, you can book flights for just a few thousand points.
While this may not be the best use of ThankYou points, if your goal is to fly JetBlue on points, this would be the time to transfer points. You’ll likely get more value out of your points by transferring to a partner like Avianca or Air France/KLM Flying Blue and booking premium-cabin awards, but sometimes the best use of points is the redemption that will save you money on a flight you’re already planning to book.
Right now the Citi ThankYou Premier has a 50,000-point sign-up bonus after spending $4,000 in the first three months. You’ll have about two months to earn the sign-up bonus if you want to transfer the points to JetBlue at the increased ratio. American Express is also sending out targeted bonus offers on point transfers to JetBlue, although that promotion will end on March 25.
