Iberia Plus is a quirky, but quite handy, mileage program that uses Avios points via a distance-based chart, similar to British Airways. However, Iberia is plagued by fewer massive surcharges than British Airways and doesn’t charge additional points for connections in the same manner as British Airways. Award flights booked with Iberia Avios are priced based on the total distance flown instead of per segment. However, no program is perfect, and if you wanted to use Iberia Avios to fly on One World partner, American Airlines, you had to book a round trip award.
But today, TPG tipster Arthur T. alerted us that the Iberia site was allowing him to price out one-way awards using Iberia Avios to fly on American Airlines flights, though the award chart still says rates are based on return flights. Iberia’s website is temperamental at times, but our tests yielded the same results getting up to the booking page (I did not press the final “book” button). While it won’t always be in your best interest to do so, it does appear possible to book one-way Iberia Plus awards on American Airlines flights.
For example, here is a one-way itinerary in economy using Iberia Avios to fly from Houston (IAH) – Dallas (DFW) – Wichita (ICT) on American Airlines for 11,000 Avios and $14.60 in taxes/fees. These flights total a bit under the first pricing band of 600 flown miles.
However, if you can book a round trip, you are likely better off, as the round trip flights on this route price at just 17,000 Avios since they are between 1,001 and 2,000 flown miles. Two one-ways booked separately would cost 22,000 Iberia Avios. If this trip was even a little shorter, and under 1,000 miles flown, the deal would be better at 12,000 total Avios.
But — sometimes you just need (or can only find) a one-way award on American Airlines operated flights, and right now that seems bookable via Iberia Plus.
While we are on the topic of Iberia Avios, note that if you took advantage of the insane Iberia promotion this summer to earn up to 90,000 Iberia Avios, you must use those Avios by Dec. 1, or they will disappear into the night. With the clock ticking, at least you can now add one-way awards on American Airlines to the ways you can burn those points.
Should you need additional Iberia Avios, today is the final day for a 40% transfer bonus to Iberia from Amex Membership Rewards cards such as the American Express® Gold Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express.
