WHEN Airbnb launched into the sharing economy in 2007, budget travelers rejoiced. They could finally say “so long” to the grotty two-starred hotels and hello to swanky city center apartments, for the same cost.
Recently, Airbnb Experiences was added to the site. This allows guests to book locally led tours and workshops. From cookery courses, jungle treks and meeting the local community, people were able to easily get involved in the culture around them without feeding into a faceless, capitalist well-marketed scheme.
Now, Chesky is considering launching an airline.
“We’ve seriously considered a lot of things around aviation and we’ve spent a lot of time exploring different concepts,” Chesky told The Sunday Times.
“We definitely want to make sure, though, that we can get into the end-to-end trip business.”
Chesky went on to compare Airbnb to Jeff Bezos’s Amazon empire. In the sense that the original book retailer was now a one-stop shop for just about anything. Chesky wants Airbnb to be the all-round holiday planner, booker, flyer, and accommodator.
According to a report last month form The Information, Airbnb has been working on plans to build an airline for over a year. Chesky then teased eager travelers with a series of tweets asking his followers what their perfect flying experience would be.
Let's say you could wave a magic wand and have the perfect flying experience, what would that look like? Three vectors: get me there faster, cheaper, better experience Faster=supersonic, cheaper=electric, better experience=???
However, don’t go expecting to have a neatly packed Airbnb vacation anytime as soon as this airline development could take years to build and put into action. Especially since Chesky has vision of creating the world’s first supersonic-electric plane.
