Marriott International and travel tech company Alibaba will test a self-service check-in system that uses facial-recognition technology.
The pilot is being launched this month at the Hangzhou Marriott Hotel Qianjiang and Sanya Marriott Hotel Dadonghai Bay, with the goal of a global rollout across Marriott International’s properties in the future.
The project is part of an ongoing joint venture between the companies, which recently launched a pay-after-you-stay booking platform for Chinese travelers called Post Post Pay.
“We are excited to partner with the joint venture yet again to offer an innovative and convenient check-in alternative for Chinese travelers,” said Henry Lee, chief operations officer and managing director of Marriott International Greater China and a board member of the joint venture. “Marriott International has a track record of embracing cutting-edge technology to create memorable experiences for guests. With technology, our hotel associates can work more efficiently to do what they do best — delivering personalized service to our guests.”
The companies said the new system cuts the traditional hotel check-in process from at least three minutes to less than one minute, using a kiosk where guests scan their IDs, take a photo and input their contact details. The machine dispenses room key cards after identities and booking information are verified.
