The 6 000-hectare reserve adjoins the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and is made up of a wilderness area and tribal land that has provided grazing for wildlife for centuries.
The first phase of getting the concession wildlife-ready took place from September 3-4. Four men from the local community and Craig Turner of Mantis Biyela Lodge, burned 5 500 hectares of the reserve. With the burn and the anticipated rains to follow, it will take around two to four weeks for new grass to appear.
The process has been managed by the Mantis teams at Biyela and Mthembu Lodge, under the guidance of Ezemvelo.
