THE new immigration process is called the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) and will be issued through an automated authorization process which is centralized across the Schengen Area.
The new ETIAS process only applies to citizens from nations that have agreed on visa-free entry terms with the EU, Malaysia included.
This new process will not affect Malaysian’s visa-free entry rights but will be made mandatory as of 2020.
ETIAS is part of an EU intergovernmental legislative initiative which aims to heighten the security of the member states.
Those from Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, UAE, Japan and around 70 other nations worldwide, will also need to engage in this process as of 2020, in order to gain entry to the 33 Schengen Member States.
The ETIAS process is set to be fast, cheap and durable. It can be done online for the cost of around US$13 (approximately RM50) and will be valid for three years.
So, how does it work?
However, gaining ETIAS approval does not guarantee entry to the EU as the decision still lies with border controllers. It is also highly recommended to start the process at least 72 hours (three days) before the date of your departure.
You can check the ETIAS entry requirements for each Schengen Member State here.
