Singita is in the process of securing land in Mozambique and Rwanda, with two projects planned in Mozambique and one in Rwanda. The operator also has 12 lodges operating in South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.
Speaking to media on Thursday, Mark Witney, Chief Operating Officer at Singita, said while the land was being secured, at this stage he was unable to reveal much detail about future projects.
One of the areas is Karingani Game Reserve in Mozambique is on the border of Kruger National Park. The area was created through the consolidation of 27 pieces of land. A fence has been constructed on the outer border on the Mozambique side, and Witney said the ultimate goal was to see the fence dropped, adding that game had already started moving into the area.
“We’re not yet sure whether and where we will build a Singita lodge,” said Witney. He said other operators were being invited to come on board as the area was too big to manage and sustain by themselves. Much of the work in the area is in collaboration with Peace Parks and will form part of a Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
The Mozambique government is also working with the operator to secure a substantial piece of coastline. The project will aim to protect the wetlands, estuaries and the adjacent ocean.
The project planned for Rwanda will offer the gorilla experience, and the aim is to open a lodge in 2019. Witney said the area was at the base of Volcanoes National Park. He said the project would work well with the operator’s Tanzanian circuit and that customs and immigration officials would be located at Singita’s airstrip in Rwanda to facilitate easy access between Tanzania and Rwanda.
The operator is also working on opening up a new Environmental Education Centre in the Sabi Sand in South Africa, which will be modelled on the ones in the Serengeti and Pamushana.
