INDIA’S first bullet train is currently under construction with sights of opening for business in 2020.
The train will have a top speed of 350 kilometers per-hour and is expected to link the two major cities in around two hours, cutting the current commute time by six hours.
The bullet train will undoubtedly save commuters’ time.
From Thane, commuters will be able to reach Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in just 10 minutes. This cuts a solid 20 minutes off the current journey time.
However, this time-saving luxury comes at a cost.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) approximates the fare range will be 1.5 times higher than the fare of the first-class AC local train, the Hindustan Times reports.
Officials estimate a one-way journey from Virar to BKC will set commuters back Rs500 (US$8), while a trip from Thane to BKC is Rs250 (US$4), and Boisar to BKC will cost Rs750 (US$12).
The fare structuring can be seen alongside a prototype of the bullet train at the three-day Magnetic Maharashtra conclave in Mumbai.
The event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday as part of the “Make in India” initiative set up by Modi in 2014.
The NHSRCL aims to bring in 35 bullet trains by 2022 which will make an average of 70 trips per day.
