During my recent trip to the city of Chihuahua following the Tianguis Turistico tourism conference in Mexico, I was a guest for two nights at the Ramada Encore Chihuahua. It proved to be a comfortable place to stay, in a location that’s convenient for some types of travel. This is a hotel review of my travel experience there. (You can also watch my video hotel tour using this link.)
THE AMBIANCE: Located in an upscale, business-oriented neighborhood called Juventud, the Radisson Encore Chihuahua hotel is set in a modern building. In keeping with Ramada’s Encore brand, the mood is somewhat hip, with a fresh ambiance and stylish furnishings in the lobby — but a mid-priced positioning (somewhat like Starwood’s Aloft brand).
MY ROOM: Guest rooms at this Chihuahua hotel are small, but designed to make maximum use of space and dramatic, dark red color accents. There is a work desk, a small sofa that folds out into a single bed, a small safe deposit box (too small for a laptop) and a wall-mounted TV. The small closet is covered with a curtain. The bathroom is equally small, but with rather cool metal accessories, and the shower is larger than you’d expect. Amenities include an iron and small ironing board, and standard bathroom amenities, including a hair dryer. The double bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows. The free WiFi is a plus, although unfortunately it had the tendency to “unhook” automatically, requiring me to log back in multiple times.
HOTEL FEATURES: The property has a very comfortable lobby that’s conducive to hanging out, a tiny-but-useful 24-hour gym and a dining area that serves a free breakfast buffet (one evening they even had a live saxophone player in this area). There is no on-site restaurant, but the small convenience counter in the lobby has snacks, drinks sandwiches, and the staff kindly offers to heat up the sandwiches for you — which was a welcome service when I arrived very late on the first night with an appetite but no desire to walk to the nearby restaurants.
Within walking distance are a number of decent sit-down chain restaurants, including Mercado Reforma, Wing’s Army and Buffalo Wild Wings.
BEST FOR: The Ramada Encore Chihuahua hotel is best for business travelers looking to be near the offices in the Juventud area, as well as leisure travelers looking for a mid-priced option with modern decor and proximity to multiple dining options.
ROOM RATES: About $73 and up. (You can compare the best hotel rates at more than a dozen top travel sites by using the LatinFlyer search engine!)
