Ever since the US Department of Transportation approved domestic airlines to apply for flights between the US and Cuba, airlines have engaged in a race to be the first to the island nation. As of last month, it was JetBlue that was going to be the first to launch flights, beginning on August 31. However, Florida-based Silver Airways will beat JetBlue to the punch. Originally, the airline had indicated that it would begin service between Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Santa Clara (SNU) on September 1, but has since added an earlier flight, scheduled for tomorrow (August 30).
The inaugural flight won’t come cheap — the one-hour journey will set you back $427. Passengers booked on the original inaugural flight on September 1 won’t be rebooked to the earlier flight, as it’s an addition rather than a change to the existing flight. It’s entirely possible, too, that people wanting to make history by being among the first to fly between the two nations will clamor to get on the earlier trip, leaving Thursday’s flight much emptier than expected.
