East London Airport is planning major renovations, with work expected to start next year.
The project is still at the consultant appointment stage and once the project scoping is concluded, the project will go out to tender.
Renovations include the installation of a rainwater harvest system for the firefighting section, a R215m (€13.5) multi-storey parking lot, a R72m (€4.5m) expansion of the departure lounge, a R21m (€1.3m) solar plant, and a R27m (€1.7m) extension of the existing apron, according to Dispatch Live.
Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) Senior Manager for Corporate Affairs, Senzeni Ndebele, told Tourism Update that the expansion of the departure lounge would ease congestion during peak periods and thereby improve passenger experience.
There was not expected to be any disruption to flights and passenger convenience would remain a priority, said Ndebele.
