Cuba will team with France to modernize Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport.
The announcement, made by the Cuba government on its website Wednesday, came as commercial flights between the U.S. and Cuba are set to commence at the end of this month.
The French authority Aeroports de Paris, which runs Charles de Gaulle, Orly and 12 other airports and airfields in the Paris region, will operate Jose Marti under a concession contract.
The French company Bouygues Batiment International will handle construction at the airport as Cuba attempts to accommodate a 50% increase in international traffic.
Cuba provided no details on the airport project, and didn’t say when it would commence.
In an announcement posted on the government website Monday, Cuba said that during the first half of this year the country welcomed 2.1 million visitors, an increase of 11.7% over 2015.
The government cited the agreement reached between the U.S. and Cuba in December 2014 that began the process of normalizing relations between the longtime adversaries as the catalyst for the increased interest among travelers.
