This year, members of the public were called on to nominate areas of concern in South Africa for the Most Endangered Cultural Heritage Sites campaign, an annual initiative of the Heritage Monitoring Project (HMP).
Between June and August more than 46 heritage sites across a range of categories were submitted. The final list of endangered sites was released by HMP on September 21. They include amaMpondo Cultural Heritage Landscape in the Eastern Cape; Buffelsjachtsrivier Bridge in the Western Cape; Canteen Kopje in the Northern Cape; Central Mill Rimers Creek in Mpumalanga; Cullinan Mine Workers Compound in Gauteng; East Fort in the Western Cape; Pageview in Gauteng; Pilgrim’s Rest in Mpumalanga; Timbershed in Eastern Cape; and Westfort Village in Gauteng.
According to Jacques Stoltz, founding member of the HMP: “Most of the sites are threatened by a combination of poor heritage law enforcement, mining licences being issued with complete disregard to our heritage, urbanisation, under-investment, poor state asset management and the seemingly endless delays in resolving land claims and the limbo that many communities still find themselves in in the shadow of apartheid.”
The full list of sites are available at www.theheritageportal.co.za. While there will be an annual call for submissions, members of the public can continue to submit sites on The Heritage Portal as part of the ongoing identification and monitoring of at-risk cultural heritage resources.
