While Ambergris Caye wins the volume award for tourists in Belize, Placencia has emerged as the best luxury travel destination and we’ve got a new review posted of Belize Ocean Club.
Opened in 2013 and now really hitting its stride, Belize Ocean Club is a resort situated on one of the thinnest sections of the peninsula, giving it an enviable location straddling the lagoon side and the ocean side. You can walk the beach at sunrise, then the same day kick back with a cocktail by the waterfront at sunset, watching the sky turn orange behind the mountains.
This means the resort is split in two by the road running the length of the Placencia region, with the large swimming pool, dive shop, and beach on one side, the main restaurant, night bar, and lobby on the other. The suites are split between the two areas also, essentially giving you a choice between which body of water to look at since all of them have a view. (The ones by the lagoon are a tad quieter too, a little further from the road and no noise from kids or groups getting rowdy in the swimming pool.
They really are all suites here, with the layout being the same among all the units. The main difference comes in when you open up a second bedroom to make it a two-bedroom suite. Also, the Penthouse Suites have high vaulted ceilings, making them feel larger, and a loftier view.
All of the spaces here are attractive places to while away your time. The pool is large enough for laps and looks past the palapa bar and dining terrace to the calm sea beyond. This is a good beach for parents with young kids because the waves are seldom higher than your ankles. That makes the water excellent for taking out the provided toys as well. You can go kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding without having to have a lot of skills or experience.
Central America often gets a bad rap for its lack of culinary finesse and Belize is no exception. The kitchen staff here does a good job though, elevating basic Belize dishes to a higher level and dressing up international options in a manner that will please well-traveled luxury guests. It’s hard to beat the view either, with tables looking out at the lagoon and mountains through the floor to ceiling windows.
It’s no drawn-out affair to get here. You can fly on Maya Island Air on a short hop from the international airport in the capital and then it’s about 15 minutes down the road from there after a quick baggage retrieval from a cart.
In a region that already has some of the country’s top resorts despite its low population and mellow village, Belize Ocean Club is another excellent option for high-end travelers.
