Just like those massive shops we’re often forced to walk through at international airports, airlines bring in a ton of revenue through duty-free sales. Depending on the carrier and current exchange rates, you can sometimes score a pretty great deal as well, but more often than not you’ll come out ahead by shopping around. Normally we’re talking the difference of a few bucks — however, with this particular product, you’ll pay as much as $2,300 more by making your purchase on the plane.
So what is this thing? It’s the Breitling Navitimer 01 — a gorgeous watch, for sure, but a pretty steep purchase at the 7,077 Swiss Francs (about $7,200) you’ll pay on board. On the ground, however, you can buy a (nearly) identical model for as little as $4,900 — still a tremendous sum, but a far cry from what you’ll spend onboard.
The version you’ll get through Swiss is a bit different, however — it’s a “Boeing 777 Edition,” with a special engraving on the rear and a unique second hand with a tip that’s shaped like an airplane. Breitling only made 777 of these limited-edition watches, and while it’ll probably command more than the standard model at resale, it’s hard to justify the additional expense.
What’s also unique about this particular watch is that Swiss actually carries it on the plane — so if you decide to buy one, you can wear it right away. The airline has at least one on its 777-300ER flights, and you can get it on other intercontinental flights as well, but you’ll need to pre-order it here. Oh, and if you don’t want to fork over $7,200, you could always use your miles — 1.5 million of them, to be exact.
