The installation of WeChat Pay across the airport is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and poised to increase traveler spending.
Changi Airport Group (CAG) and WeChat Pay announced on July 12, 2018, that they have signed a three-year marketing partnership for joint promotions.
Over 150 stores across Changi Airport will start accepting WeChat Pay by the end of the year.
These outlets include duty-free departments, luxury retail stores, and the online platform, iShopChangi.
The iShopChangi store is a haven for busy travelers who don’t want to waste time shopping in the airport.
Instead, flyers can make online purchases from the comfort of their homes or offices and collect their goodies from the airport before flying.

Currently, the wider WeChat platform which has an integrated messaging system is mostly used by China’s citizens.
It has more than a billion monthly active users and this number is growing year-on-year, according to a statement.
As China is one of Changi Airport’s key passenger markets, with Chinese passengers accounting for almost a third of purchases made in the airport, the implementation of WeChat Pay as a payment platform couldn’t make more sense.
And as a way of thanking WeChat Pay and Changi Airport customers, both parties involved in the deal have launched shopping promotions instore and online.
“We are pleased to be able to offer WeChat Pay as an additional payment platform for our passengers,” Changi Airport Group General Manager of Advertising, Marketing, and Promotions Edwin Lim said in a statement.
Lim also added that the partnership will allow the airport to send customized promotions and offers to WeChat Pay users.
