On my most recent trip to the Dominican Republic to review the luxurious, brand-new Real InterContinental Santo Domingo hotel for TravelAge West, I flew JetBlue to and from New York City. This is a review of my experience on the flight back.
THE ROUTE: Santo Domingo – Las Americas International Airport to New York/JFK; Airbus A320; economy class; 3 hours, 28 minutes
THE DEPARTURE: Traffic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, can be brutal. To be safe, allow an hour to get to the airport from just about anywhere in the city. The Santo Domingo airport itself is relatively small. You can expect to see a bunch of airlines you probably haven’t flown: Venezuela’s Aserca, InterCaribbean, PAWA Dominican, Dominican Wings, Insel Air and Laser are a few of the carriers that fly here.
Check-in was relatively fast — about 13 minutes to get my boarding pass and drop off my bag (JetBlue has no kiosks at this airport, so you need to check in with a human). Plan on an extra few minutes to fill out the exit immigration form, which must be handed in before leaving the country. The security processing line took about 10 minutes (they require passengers to remove shoes and computers), and after security, international passengers also must pass through an immigration processing line (which took me an additional seven minutes).
The departure gate area has the predictable array of duty-free shopping, as well as a Hudson News magazine and book store, a massage stand, Domino’s pizza place and a few local shops.
THE AIRCRAFT: The JetBlue Airbus A320 had the predictably consistent layout (that’s one thing you can say about JetBlue; they’re more consistent than most carriers).
INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT & SERVICE: Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are free, and a few heftier food items are for sale too. JetBlue is known for its inflight entertainment, which includes free movies and TV programs on the seat back entertainment screens.
THE ARRIVAL: We landed on time at JFK and, thanks to Global Entry, my processing was swift. Even the baggage claim experience was fast — which is not always the case in New York City!
