Once again, Air France is preparing to deal with hundreds of canceled flights as pilots, flight attendants and ground crew begin yet another series of strikes. Unions have planned strikes for April 11, April 17 and 18, as well as April 23 and 24, according to a notice posted on the Air France website.
The airline canceled 30% of its flights for Wednesday, April 11, and stated that last-minute delays and cancellations might occur, including for flights on April 12. Around 25% of local flights and 40% of long-haul flights were affected. Statistics from FlightAware show that 345 flights, or 45% of Air France’s total scheduled flights for April 11, have been canceled as of 4:30 pm.
Air France workers are striking for higher wages, which have remained static since 2011. Several unions are working together to demand a 6% pay raise across the board.
Reuters reports that the strikes have already cost the airline $210 million thus far, although other reports put the number as high as $247 million. Furthermore, cancelled flights have massively disrupted transportation in France during a time when railway employees are also protesting planned reforms.
A spokesperson for the pilots’ union said that talks had been scheduled for Thursday, and that notice for future strikes could be withdrawn if an acceptable offer were made. On April 10, Air France raised its 2018 pay offer to a 2% boost, up from its previous 1% increase, but still below the 6% stipulation.
