AFRO-LATINOS MAKE UP 25% OF LATIN AMERICA with a population over 130 million . And yet when a Pew Research study, for the first time in history, focused on Afro-Latinos in the United States, they found some surprising results. Out of the 24% of U.S. Latinos who identify as “Afro-Latino”, only 18% identified as “Black,” 24% identified as “Hispanic” and 39% identified as “White.”
This has a large effect on U.S. census data. If Afro-Latinos counted themselves towards the black population in the United States, the black population would increase from 13% to 18% of the total U.S. population.
